Honorable Chief Minister of Delhi; Shiela Dikshit flagged-off the E-rick at her residence. John C McCarthy, vice-president and principal analyst at Forrester Research, has predicted and analysed some of the biggest shifts for the global technology industry, including his famous 2004 study, which claimed that 3.3 million white-collar American jobs (500,000 of them in IT) would shift offshore to countries such as India by 2010. Zynga, creator of "FarmVille" and other hugely popular online social games, has launched a new title on Facebook, "FrontierVille," which features pioneers seeking to tame the Wild West.

"You've gone out into the wilderness to start a new life," said Brian Reynolds, Zynga's chief game designer. "You're actually raising a virtual family on the frontier."
"You can add a frontier spouse, create little child avatars," Reynolds, who led the development of FrontierVille.
Zynga claims more than 230 million monthly active users of its games, which include "Mafia Wars," "Treasure Isle," "Zynga Poker," "Cafe World," "FishVille" and "PetVille" in addition to "FarmVille."

Municipal Corporation of Delhi Inaugurate Tallest Building

A newly-constructed Civic Centre building in the heart of the capital which houses the headquarters of Municipal Corporation of Delhi was unveiled on 22nd April 2010.

The 28-storeyed 112-metre landmark building has been constructed at a cost of Rs 650 crore.

Inaugurating the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Civic Centre, Home Minister P. Chidambaram vowed to make Delhi a world-class city and appealed to the civic administration to improve all the basic services like communication, education and health.

CBSE:Extra Curriculars can Boost Grades

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has delivered on its promise to promote co-curricular performance in its schools.

Meant for Classes IX and X, the new policy will raise the grades of students in one or two academic subjects if they do well in extra curricular areas. 

Under CBSE’s new concept of Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE), a child is assessed throughout the year in both academics and extra-curricular activities. A child can score a maximum of 42 grade points in the latter.

As per the new promotion policy, if a child, at the end of the year, scores anything between 34 points and 42 points in extra curricular activities, he is eligible to have his grade up scaled to the next level in two academic subjects. A co-scholastic score between 19 points and 33 points would translate into a grade improvement by one level in one academic subject.

India's Rising Temperature Affecting Everything !

Scorching — that’s what Bangalore has become. Sunday’s maximum temperature of 37.6 degrees Celsius and minimum temperature of 24.2 degrees Celsius has been the highest in the past 25 years. The all-time maximum and minimum temperatures for April till date has been 38.3 degrees Celsius (April 30, 1931) and 14.4 degrees Celsius (April 26, 1894).

"The month of April always experiences extreme summer heat during day and night. The trend is likely to continue into May,"  

April 11, 1983 had also recorded a very close 37.7 degrees Celsius and this was the last recorded highest temperature in the past 25 years. 

In an ominous sign of climate change hitting home, India has seen accelerated warming in the past few decades and the temperature-rise pattern is now increasingly in line with global warming trends. 

The most up-to-date study of temperatures in India, from 1901 to 2007, has found that while it’s getting warmer across regions and seasons, night temperatures have been rising significantly in almost all parts of the country. 

The rise in night temperatures — 0.2 degrees Celsius per decade since 1970, according to the study — could have potentially adverse impact on yields of cereal crops like rice. The paper also finds that

India's New Army Chief ?

GENERAL V K SINGH, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Eastern command, took over as India’s Army chief from General Deepak Kapoor and will assume office from Thursday. Mr Singh, who is India’s senior-most infantry officer, will be the first trained commando to become the Army chief. The 59-year-old new Army chief has vast experience in counterinsurgency operations, line of control and highaltitude operations. A third-generation officer from the Rajput Regiment, which was also the regiment of Field Marshal K M Cariappa, the first Indian Army chief, Mr Singh participated in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War as a young Captain and was awarded the Yudh Sena Medal for his distinguished service during Operation Pawan against the LTTE in Sri Lanka. He will be India’s 26th Army chief and will stay at the helm for over two years. Mr Kapoor retires from the Army after over four decades of service.

Commonwealth Games:Delhi Edition 2010

 

The Commonwealth Games is a multinational, multi-sport event. Held every four years, it involves the elite athletes of the Commonwealth of Nations. Attendance at the Commonwealth Games is typically around 5,000 athletes. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is the organisation that is responsible for the direction and control of the Commonwealth Games.

The first such event, then known as the British Empire Games, was held in 1930 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The name changed to British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954, to British Commonwealth Games in 1970 and assumed the current name of the Commonwealth Games in 1978.

All About Filmfare Awards:History,Records & Facts.

The Filmfare Awards are presented annually by The Times Group to honour both artistic and technical excellence of professionals in the Hindi language film industry of India. The Filmfare ceremony is one of the oldest and most prominent film events given for Hindi films in India. The awards were first introduced in 1954, the same year as the National Film Awards and were initially referred to as the Clare Awards after the editor of The Times of India, Clare Mendionca. A dual voting system was developed in 1956. Under this system, "in contrast to the National Film Awards, which are decided by a panel appointed by Indian Government, the Filmfare Awards are voted for by both the public and a committee of experts." The Filmfare Awards have been often referred to as Hindi film industry's equivalent of the Oscar.

History:

The Filmfare awards were first introduced in 1954. The Clares was the original name of the award ceremony, named after The Times of India critic Clare Mendonca. Readers of Filmfare were polled to decide the winners, and over 20,000 readers spread throughout India participated in the polls; trophies were given to winners of the popular vote. In the first awards function, held on 21 March 1954 at the Metro Thatre of Mumbai, only five awards were presented: Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Music Director. Do Bigha Zameen was the first movie to win the award for Best Film. The first winners for other four categories were: Bimal Roy for his direction of Do Bigha Zameen, Dilip Kumar for his performance in Daag, Meena Kumari for her performance in Baiju Bawra, and Naushad for his music in Baiju Bawra.

To celebrate the 25th year of the awards the statues were made in silver and to celebrate the 50th year the statues were made in gold.

Education Has Finally Started To Attract !

It is very heartening to see that education has finally started to attract the attention it has always deserved but was given an inexplicable short shrift especially in the last 20 years or so. While India talked about financial and other reforms, the education sector actually saw even more regressive policy steps and more stifling of efforts to create high-quality capacity from primary schooling right through post-graduate studies.

At this time, there is a lot of optimism about the reforms in the education sector. Hopefully, many of the progressive reformist measures articulated by the Union HRD minister since his induction into the Cabinet last year will see their implementation in the current year itself, creating the right policy framework and operating environment for attracting large investments into the sector. Indeed, India’s challenge in the education sector, as it is in all other social and physical infrastructure sectors, is mind-boggling. For a population that is likely to touch almost 1.2 billion by the time the next census begins in 2011, India needs — just to illustrate this humungous challenge — over 1.5 million qualified doctors. Against that, we have no more than 550,000 and of this small number, probably 30 per cent or more may be concentrated in the four metros alone. The current annual capacity for MBBS seats is less than 40,000. India’s gross enrolment ratio (number of students in colleges) is just above 10 per cent, while the same for developed nations is over 50 per cent. Just to increase this ratio to 20 per cent in 10 years will require a near doubling of higher education seats in India (the school-going population would have increased by more than 100 million in the next 10 years), needing an investment of more than Rs 480,000 crore. Not only this, 45 per cent of all higher education seats in India are allocated to humanities and arts compared to 3 per cent in Brazil, 14 per cent in China, and 4 per cent in Russia. Not surprisingly, India is way behind in seats available for technical and business/manufacturing-oriented education compared to developed or major developing countries. And finally, while justifiably, a lot of attention is focused on primary education and higher education, and relatively less attention is given to those estimated 400 million out of about 460 million jobs which are skill-based and which require vocational training. Less than 6 per cent of this huge mass of workers receive any form of vocational training. The current landscape of vocational training in India comprises about 5,500 industrial training institutes and about 1,750 polytechnics. China, having a population not much bigger than India’s, has over 500,000 such institutes.

What Will Happen To Pakistan ?

First came the news of the arrest of the commander of the Afghan Taliban, Mullah Baradar, in Karachi, said to be in a joint operation of the Inter-Services Intelligence of Pakistan (ISI) and U.S. agencies. Though the arrest was made on February 8/9, the information became public only on February 15/16. He was reported to be under joint interrogation of the agencies of the two countries. Though this information was first denied by the Interior Minister Rehman Malik confirmation later came from the ISI’s spokesman and subsequently from the Foreign Minister, Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi. He said the action was not under pressure from allies but in Pakistan’s own national interest. Now it is reported that 124 terrorist suspects have been arrested in Pakistan, including five senior members of the Taliban Supreme command and nine militants with close links to Al Qaeda. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Senator John Kerry have praised the new cooperation between the Pakistan Army and Intelligence and the U.S. So has the U.S. Special envoy to the Af-Pak area, Richard Holbrooke, who was visiting Pakistan. Mullah Baradar was earlier considered to be a key person in the negotiations between the Taliban and the Karzai regime.

Some observers have described these developments as Pakistani moves to gain the goodwill of the U.S. and NATO to ensure that Pakistan will have its way in Afghanistan after the U.S. withdrawal in 2011. Others think that these actions place Pakistan in an advantageous position to facilitate negotiations between the Karzai government and the reconcilable Taliban as per the strategy formulated in the London conference. Civil Services Exams :New Way !

The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had last month approved the revamp of the preliminary exam on lines suggested by the Union Public Service Commission. The UPSC is further expected to push for changes in the Civil Service (Mains) Examination. But this will be only after examining the response to changes in the preliminary exam.
The UPSC had told the government two years ago there was a need to test not just the knowledge of aspirants in particular subjects but their aptitude for "a demanding life in the civil services". It had also recommended bringing down the number of attempts a candidate could take. But Dr. Singh has kept this aspect on hold.
Now the government has decided to replace the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination with the Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT), which will test candidates on their aptitude and analytical abilities rather than their ability to memorise.

“The CSAT is expected to come into effect from 2011,” Minister of State in the Ministry of Personnel, Prithviraj Chavan, told Lok Sabha on Wednesday 10 March – 2010.Confirming the change for the first stage of CSE, he told the Lok Sabha that the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has approved the proposal for introduction of CSAT in place of the existing CS (Preliminary) Examination.
In his written reply, he said: "CSAT is expected to come into effect from CSE, 2011." The proposal to this effect was sent to the PMO last year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) which conducts CSE every year to select candidates for elite all-India services, including IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS and others Group 'A' and Group 'B' central jobs.
As of now, the change will be effective only for the first stage of the Civil Services Examination (CSE) from 2011 onwards. The second and third stages — CS (Main) Examination and interview respectively — may remain the same till a committee of experts goes into various aspects of the..........
