All About Infosys Technologies & Its Aggressive HR policy Called I-Race

Infosys Technologies happens to be not only the country's second largest IT services company by revenue but a dream employer. The company has consistently been rated as second after IT major TCS in the country.

The company which has forecast a 16-18% growth for the current financial year, hired close to 27,000 employees during the last fiscal. However, the recent months saw Infosys facing severe criticism from employees due to its aggressive HR policy called i-Race. The policy led to 4,500 demotions last year.

Here is a look at the employee makeup at Infosys, which includes the number of employees, salaries, promotions and attrition levels.
Total No.Of Employees:

The company's total employee strength stood at 1.13 lakh on March 31, 2010 which includes 1.06 lakh software professionals, 8,880 trainees and 6,932 sales & support staff.
Salaries paid:

According to reports, Infosys paid $134 million (nearly Rs 600 crore) in salaries in 2009-10 -- the highest amount in the IT industry's history in India in a year.

The company recently announced a salary hike of 14-17 per cent for all Indian employees, with effect from April 1. In case of overseas employees, the effective salary hike will be in the range of two-three per cent.

Promotions:

Nearly 7,500 people were promoted by Infosys during the past year, out of whom 2,500 got impacted by the company's new employee restructuring programme called I-Race.

iRace actually led to 4,500 demotions in October 2009. Of the 4,500 employees demoted after the introduction of iRace, nearly 2,500 have been given promotion (effective April 2010) while the remaining have reportedly been retained at the same level.

Rejected 94% job seekers:

In the last fiscal (2009-10), Infosys got over 4 lakh job applications and rejected a whopping 94% of them.

The company stated that out of these, around 77,000 applicants underwent written test, approximately 61,000 were interviewed and 26,200 job offers were made in the last fiscal. This means that the company made employment offers to nearly 6 per cent of the total applications received.

28% applicants reject Infosys' offer:

Interestingly, not all accepted the offer from the biggest IT employer.

The company's total headcount witnessed a gross addition of only 18,905 employees, as per the annual filing. Besides, the net addition, after taking into account the attrition during the year, to the company's payroll was 6,837 employees in the fiscal ended March 31, 2010.

Considering the gross addition numbers, the number of employees who joined the company during the year account for only 72.2 per cent of the total number of job offers -- meaning 27.8 per cent did not join.

Hiring & attrition:

Infosys has declared that the attrition rate among its employees increased to 13.4 per cent in 2009-10 from 11.1 per cent in the previous year.

The company plans to add 30,000 employees this financial year (2010-11). S D Shibulal, chief operating officer, recently said, "During FY11 we plan to recruit 30,000. Last year, we started with 18,000 and ended up with 27,000."

Utilisation rate:

The company reported that the utilisation rate of employees, including trainess, in the last quarter was 69.3% in contrast to 68.8% in the December 2009 quarter. Manpower utilisation stood at 77.1 per cent, excluding trainees.
